The hospital would have to think through getting the family member a visa. Would the hospital be liable/responsible for the family member since they're "sponsoring" the trip to pick up the patient? And what if the family member/escort decided to stay in the U.S? We'd be right back where we started. It's an interesting idea, though.

Would it be feasible to fly up a family member and discharge the patient to him/her? That would be the price of a couple of airfares, hotel for a couple nights, meals, wheelchair giveaway, but still much, much cheaper than the medical escort service. Of course this assumes there is an able bodied relative to call upon.
